The purpose of this book is to reveal, explore and further the debate on the aesthetic potentials of sustainable architecture and its practice. This book opens a new area of scholarship and discourse in the design and production of sustainable architecture, one that is based in aesthetics. The chapters in this book have been compiled from architects and scholars working in diverse research and practice areas in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. While they approach the subject matter from different angles, the chapters of the book help clarify the key principles behind environmental concerns and sustainability in architecture. At its very core, Aesthetics of Sustainable Architecture underlines the connection that exists between our approach to the environment and sustainability on one hand, and our approach to certain aesthetic propositions and practices on the other.

The Undivided City, by Jacqueline Schoemaker, deals with the shifting borders between controlled and uncontrolled space, with the interaction between an individual user of the urban space and the planned environment. The title is derived from a policy instrument by which population groups are spread across the city in order to prevent ghetto forming but by which human behaviour is normalised and uniformity is the result. In this book Jacqueline Schoemaker cuts the city into slices by walking straight lines through it. In a kind of horizontal archaeology she observes and experiences the urban space at the same time. The insights which result form the walking very concretely touch on the meaning of the concept of ‘community’.

Na Amsterdam en Den Haag staat in deze Forum het Rotterdam van architect en stedenbouwkundige Kees Christiaanse centraal. Vanaf het begin van de jaren tachtig herstelt Rotterdam zich onder de bezielende leiding van een groep schrijvers, vormgevers en architecten van de softe jaren zeventig. De film Stadsgezicht van Bob Visser, met in de hoofdrol Jules Deelder, markeert deze omslag. De kneuterigheid wordt resoluut opzij geschoven en maakt plaats voor een lofzang op de onbegrensde mogelijkheden van de metropool. Niet alleen de dynamiek maar ook het specifieke decor van Rotterdam wordt herontdekt. Kees Christiaanse heeft ten volle deelgenomen aan deze omslag door samen met anderen en geïnspireerd door de Russische constructivisten tentoonstellingen en performances in de stad op touw te zetten.
Na in de beginjaren partner te zijn geweest in het Office for Metropolitan Architecture van Rem Koolhaas start Kees Christiaanse in 1989 zijn eigen bureau KCAP in Rotterdam. Hij realiseert meerdere plannen voor de stad. Een van de belangrijkste is het dynamische masterplan voor het Wijnhavenkwartier, een zowel in de tijd als ruimte open plan, gebaseerd op bestaande stadskenmerken en vrije spelregels voor de bebouwing. Dit plan belichaamt een nieuwe stap in de traditie van de zoning laws, stedenbouwkundige regels zoals die in New York worden toegepast. Rotterdam vormt voor Kees Christiaanse de inspiratie voor zijn concept van de Open Stad, wat onder meer zijn neerslag vond in zijn curatorschap van de Internationale Architectuur Biënnale in 2009.

After Amsterdam and The Hague, the third volume in the Forum series features the Rotterdam of architect and urban planner Kees Christiaanse. Since the early 1980s Rotterdam has been recovering from the ’soft’ ’70s under the inspirational leadership of a group of writers, designers and architects. The frumpishness of that decade has been resolutely pushed aside in exchange for a panegyric to the unlimited opportunities of the metropolis. Kees Christiaanse has dedicated himself to this changeover by co-organizing exhibitions and performances in the city. After being a partner in Rem Koolhaas’s Office for Metropolitan Architecture Kees Christiaanse set up his own practice in Rotterdam in 1989. Of the designs and plans he has seen onto site in that city, one of the most important is the dynamic masterplan for Wijnhavenkwartier, a plan open in both temporal and spatial terms with its roots in existing urban traits and with flexible rules of play for the built fabric. This scheme embodies a new step in the tradition of zoning laws, urban rules such as those adhered to in New York. It is Rotterdam that has inspired Kees Christiaanse’s concept of the Open City, which earned him the curatorship of the International Architecture Biennale in 2009.

Young, enthusiastic and ambitious - this was Dutch architect John van de Water when setting off to a rapidly modernizing China in 2004. His intention was to put into practice in China the internationally recognized ideas of NEXT architects, the firm in which he is a partner.
The years that followed were hectic, with more than a million square metres’ worth of projects realized on Chinese soil. The boundaries of his Western frame of reference constantly needed reviewing in the light of the Chinese context. He encountered a wide range of conditions and situations informing the relationship between Western and Chinese thinking: incomprehension, confrontation, misunderstandings, acceptance, awareness, consensus and, ultimately, mutual benefit.

In Sweet&Salt: Water and the Dutch, American-born journalist and author Tracy Metz describes the metamorphosis the landscape of the Netherlands is currently undergoing and how the Dutch are searching for new ways of living with the water. She also reports on various places around the world, such as New Orleans, Hamburg, Vietnam, New York and China, that are working with the Dutch on a new approach to the water landscape. As the most iconic element of the Netherlands, water has been represented in countless images over the centuries. In this publication, art historian Maartje van den Heuvel reveals, in more than 125 works of art, the rich diversity of meanings the Dutch have attached to water and their waterways. Architectenbureau MVRDV en The Why Factory hebben een nieuw model voor de ontwikkeling van Aziatische steden voor ogen. Zij stellen The Vertical Village voor, een driedimensionale gemeenschap die weer persoonlijke vrijheid, diversiteit, flexibiliteit en buurtleven moet brengen in steden in Azië.

Onder invloed van demografische en economische krachten veranderen steden in Azië snel. Traditionele stadsdorpen, die eeuwenlang de kern van de steden hebben gevormd, worden in een genadeloos tempo vervangen door eenvormige woontorens. The architecture practice MVRDV and The Why Factory envision a new model for the development of Asian cities. Their idea is The Vertical Village, a three-dimensional community intended to bring back personal autonomy, diversity, flexibility and neighbourhood life to cities in Asia.

As a result of demographic and economic forces, cities in Asia are undergoing rapid change. Traditional urban villages, which formed the core of the cities for centuries, are being replaced at a merciless pace by uniform tower blocks. In tracking the development of nine very distinct Asian cities, The Vertical Village provides insight into the evolution, current situation and future of these ‘vertical urban villages’. Brilliant on the Skyline gives an impression of the new V.I.P. terminal at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. In 2011 a brand new terminal designed by VMX architects was opened.
