De vliegtuigen van popsterren, topvoetballers, leden van het Koninklijk Huis, staatshoofden en CEO’s die landen op Schiphol, worden afgehandeld bij de General Aviation Terminal. In 2011 is een gloednieuwe terminal geopend, ontworpen door VMX architecten. Brillant on the Skyline verscheen ter ere van de opening van deze nieuwe terminal.

Brillant on the Skyline geeft een impressie van het ontwerp van VMX. De diamantvormige terminal sluit naadloos aan bij de industriële omgeving van Schiphol-Oost en onderscheidt zich tegelijkertijd door zijn glamoureuze uitstraling. Door de foto’s van Jeroen Musch, het essay van Volkskrant-journaliste Marina de Vries, de plattegronden en dwarsdoorsnedes krijgt de lezer een indruk van het gebouw: een gebouw dat alleen betreden wordt door de beroemdsten en rijksten der aarde.

The third Dutch Design Yearbook offers an overview of more than 60 of the best designs produced in the Netherlands in 2010 and 2011 in the fields of spatial design, product design, fashion and graphic design. The theme of the Dutch Design Yearbook 2011 is the future. Design is evolving rapidly, and designers and their methods are increasingly being employed for forward-looking explorations and possible scenarios in the field of design, as well as for the development of strategies. The Berlage Survey verschijnt ter gelegenheid van het 20-jarig bestaan van het Instituut en biedt zowel een overzicht van de excellente onderwijspraktijk van het Berlage Instituut in de afgelopen twee decennia als een keuze uit de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse traditie in architectuur en urbanisme in relatie tot een internationale context. Het boek bestaat uit een levendige verzameling essays, manifesten, interviews, onderzoeken en afbeeldingen en geeft een overzicht van een selectie uit de productie van het instituut, waarmee tevens een bepaalde periode van het architectuurdebat wordt afgebakend. De gekozen projecten zijn een afspiegeling van de diversiteit en hoge kwaliteit van het design-onderzoek van het Berlage en zijn waardevolle bijdragen aan het debat over de bebouwde omgeving.

The Berlage Survey, inspired by the Institute’s twentieth anniversary, chronicles both the Berlage’s last two decades of exemplary educational practice and offers a select history of the Dutch tradition in architecture and urbanism in relation to its international context. The book consists of a dynamic assortment of essays, manifestos, interviews, research, conversations, projects and images. It provides a select survey of the Berlage’s production and attempts to define a period of discourse within architecture. The selection of projects suggests the diversity and rich quality of Berlage design research and the value of its contributions to discussions about the built environment.

Gerrit Rietveld heeft tussen 1949 en 1960 zes ontwerpen gemaakt voor gebouwen en interieurs op Curaçao. In alle gevallen was Chris Engels daarbij betrokken als opdrachtgever of adviseur. Engels was behalve arts ook dichter en schilder. Tussen beiden ontwikkelde zich een hechte vriendschap. In dit boek beschrijft en analyseert Jan de Heer deze ontwerpen en plaatst ze in de cultuurpolitieke ontwikkeling van het eiland. Tevens belicht hij de bijzondere relatie tussen Rietveld en Engels. Rietveld maakte in zijn ontwerpen goed gebruik van het klimaat van Curaçao. Hij trok bij het Verriet Instituut, het Richardushuis en het woonhuis voor Engels profijt van de passaatwind, paste geen gesloten wanden toe maar regelbare shutters en gebruikte grote dak-overstekken tegen directe instraling van de zon. In het Verriet Instituut maakte hij van het dak een grote regengoot om het kostbare regenwater te kunnen opvangen. Hierdoor kunnen de ontwerpen van Rietveld in de huidige Curaçaose architectenpraktijk nog steeds als inspirerend voorbeeld dienen.

Between 1949 and 1960 Gerrit Rietveld made six designs for buildings and interiors on the island of Curaçao. In each case Chris Engels was involved, either as the client or as a consultant. Aside from his medical practice, Engels was a poet and a painter. A firm friendship would grow between the two men. In Rietveld & Curaçao, Jan de Heer describes and analyses these designs and places them within the island’s cultural political development. He also sheds light on the remarkable relationship between Rietveld and Engels. Rietveld managed to incorporate the climatic conditions of Curaçao in his designs to great effect. He turned the trade winds to his advantage in the Verriet Institute, the Richardus House and the design of Engels’s own residence, introduced adjustable shutters instead of fixed walls and used large roof overhangs to keep out the direct glare of the sun. In the Verriet Institute he turned the roof into one large gutter to catch the precious rainwater. It is for these reasons that Rietveld’s designs have remained an inspirational example for Curaçaoan architectural practice to this day.

There are few topics that evoke so many different notions and images as do farmers and agriculture. The publication Images of Farming explores the production of these images in the fields of culture and myth formation, publicity and the sciences, the cultural heritage, and the fine arts.

myvillages.org is an international artist initiative, founded in 2003 by Kathrin Böhm (D/UK), Wapke Feenstra (NL) and Antje Schiffers (D). The interest of this international foundation is the rural as a space for and of cultural production. The collective aims of myvillages.org are informed by the contextual nature of the individual practices of Böhm, Feenstra and Schiffers and the autobiographical fact that they all come from small villages.

myvillages.org activities range from small scale informal presentations to long term collaborative research projects, from work in private spaces to public conferences, from exhibitions to publications and from personal questions to public debate.

This cartographic book shows the impact of infrastructure on the development of a region in a unique way. The cartography proves to be a valuable instrument for urban research.
Bieke Cattoor dissected the transport networks, roads and railways of the Kortrijk region in Belgium and filled them in with historical and topical information. The various elements in an infrastructural network turned out to be constantly evolving and to influence one another in the process. Moreover, roads and railways proved to form patterns and to lead to nodes.
This book presents a new method of dissecting the infrastructural network in a simple manner and at the same time revealing its complexity. This method can be deployed in urban research to chart the layered structure of the landscape.
