Last autumn the museum-board chose four architects out of fifty. In a public meeting the four, Brad Cloepfil, Zaha Hadid, Thom Mayne and UN Studio, presented their work and their ideas about the extension of America's oldest public art museum the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford. After the presentation a special committee visited projects of the nominees. UN Studio got the commission due to these visits and the presentation.

The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum consists of fife adjacent buildings designed and build between 1842 and 1967. UN Studio got the commission to extend the museum, to design new exhibition-rooms and to improve the organisation between the already existing buildings. Among the many project Van Berkel & Bos realised are museum Valkenhof in Nijmegen (1998), extension and renovation of the Twents Museum (Enschede, 1996) and the interior of the Aedes East gallery in Berlin (1996).
