Society wedding 2004: Aaron and Peter
Exactly sixteen years since they met in a house by RM Schindler, society couple AARON BETSKY and PETER HABERKORN finally exchanged wedding vows in Rotterdam City Hall on Saturday June 26. While the bells rang out for the newly weds, an international gathering assembled in high spirits in the sun-baked courtyard of City Hall.

AARON and PETER looked proud and a trifle bewildered as they emerged after the ceremony. In his address, city mayor IVO OPSTELTEN claimed that obtaining a Dutch driving licence was for PETER the real reason to get married. But we know better: after sixteen years it was simply time to tie the knot.

The international status of the marriage became clear to Society after the following item from our New York Society colleagues was spotted in The Architect's Newspaper:

Netherlands Architecture Institute director, former SFMOMA design

curator, and transatlantic fixture Aaron Betsky is about to tie the knot

with his longtime partner, artist Peter Haberkorn. The June 26th wedding

ceremony will mark the couple's sixteenth anniversary and will take

place in Holland-which accords equal status to same-sex marriages-at

Rotterdam's City Hall. We hear Steven Holl will document the occasion in

watercolor while Peter Eisenman sings Ave Maria and Daniel Libeskind

jumps out of a cake.

Neither Holl, Eisenman nor Libeskind were spotted by the photographer. But that didn't dampen the festive mood, however, as the cast of international celebrities in attendance made clear.

Dutch Southerners: A mischievous-looking WIEL ARETS and FRANCINE HOUBEN discover they share a secret: both pledge loyalty to the southern town of Heerlen. FRANCINE spent some of her youth there, and it's also where WIEL started his successful career.

Cheerful couple VAN BERKEL & BOS of family firm UN Studio were there to represent Amsterdam. From left to right: daughter EMMELIE, CAROLINE and BEN.

USA / Catalonia: Brotherly HANI RASHID (New York) and JOSEPH LLUIS MATEO (Barcelona). MATEO is facing procedural problems with his extension to Haarlem provincial headquarters. Just how did HANI pull it off with his neighbouring Floriade water pavilion??

New York / Rotterdam: GREGG LYNN (left) with ADRIAAN GEUZE (right), West 8 director and water-curator of the next Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. Will GREGG get a chance to emulate Big Apple colleague HANI with a successful Floriade water pavilion of his own?

Rotterdam / Catalonia: WINY MAAS, flying Dutchman from MVRDV, and VICENTE GUALLART, architect from Barcelona. VICENTE worked for MATEO before starting his own office, and BEN and WINY are good friends of his. For many of those present VINCENTE is simply 'our man' in Spain.

Berlin / Vienna: HANS JURGEN COMMERELL (left), AEDES gallery partner of former NAI director Kristin Feireiss, and WOLF PRIX (right) of Coop Himmelblau, lover of many of life's finer things, including strong cigars. An exhibition in the making perhaps?

Always difficult to please everyone.
