In May 2000 Roombeek was hit by the fireworks disaster. Much of the district was damaged beyond repair or destroyed completely. A large-scale redevelopment of the 63-hectare city-centre area supervised by Pi de Bruijn followed. Now, eight years later, Roombeek is celebrating with the Roombeek Days from June 19 to 21, 2008. Two-thirds of the neighbourhood has been completed and the new development offers more than enough for an extensive architectural tour.
