De restauratie van Sanatorium Zonnestraal is bekroond met de World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize 2010, die is toegekend aan Bierman Henket architecten en Wessel de Jonge architecten. De prijs zal in november in het Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York worden uitgereikt door Bonnie Burnham (president World Monuments Fund), Barry Bergdoll (MoMA’s Chief Curator of Architecture & Design) en Andrew Kogan (CEO Knoll Inc.).
Sanatorium Zonnestraal (1931) in Hilversum is een icoon van het Nieuwe Bouwen. Het werd ontworpen door Jan Duiker (1890-1935) en Bernard Bijvoet (1889-1979). Barry Bergdoll zegt over de restauratie van Zonnestraal, "The restoration of Zonnestraal met and exceeded the criteria for this prize. Zonnestraal is a Modern-Movement gem of concrete and glass, revelatory not only in its own time, but also each time that architects and historians have rediscovered it after years of neglect. Now that Hubert-Jan Henkets and Wessel de Jonges stabilization work on the restoration is complete, it reconfirms Zonnestraals standing as one of the most experimental designs in the fervently creative decades of modernism between the two world wars. It is at once a beacon of Dutch rationalism and a major work of modern architecture internationally, one that can now be experienced in a way that resonates with its architects intentions." De toekenning van de prijs is ook bedoeld voor de rol die dit restauratieproject heeft gespeeld om internationaal aandacht te vragen voor het erfgoed van de Moderne Beweging.
De World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize is bedoeld om de betekenis van het Nieuwe Bouwen binnen het gebouwde erfgoed onder de aandacht van het publiek te brengen.
