ALVAR AALTO SYMPOSIUM 2024
Symposium
16TH ALVAR AALTO SYMPOSIUM – THE WEIGHT OF ARCHITECTURE
How much does architecture weigh when the future of the entire planet is at stake? What is the role of architecture and design amidst ecological crises, catastrophes and political upheaval? Can design make a difference, solve problems, and bring any radical change for the better?
Two days, three themes (ERA):
ENVIRONMENT
RESOURCES
ARCHITECTURE
The themes have emerged from the topical phenomena of global crises; from climate change, extreme weather and the loss of biodiversity to political, financial and societal changes in our environment.
The Symposium is a hybrid event: onsite in Jyväskylä, Finland, and virtual for a large international audience. The event language is English. The onsite venue is the main building of the University of Jyväskylä (Alvar Aalto, 1954-55).
The rich side programme includes guided Alvar Aalto architectural tours (limited number of seats).
The 15th Alvar Aalto Medal will be awarded at the opening day of the symposium. This internationally prestigious architecture prize is awarded jointly by the Alvar Aalto Foundation, Finnish Association of Architects SAFA, Museum of Finnish Architecture, Finnish Architectural Society, and the City of Helsinki.
The Symposium is organized by the Alvar Aalto Academy together with the City of Jyväskylä, the Aalto University, Cumulus Association, Archinfo Finland, Museum of Finnish Architecture, Design Museum, and the Finnish Association of Architects SAFA.
