Protest in the City
Cursus
Protest has always been central to democracy and urban life, unfolding in streets, squares, and public spaces. From harbor strikes to #MeToo, climate marches, and Black Lives Matter, people find ways to make their voices heard. However, repression, surveillance, security measures, and gentrification increasingly limit opportunities for dissent.
In this final thematic block, we join Rene Boer, Mark Minkjan, and Katía Truijen of Loom – practice for cultural transformation – to explore public space as a platform for protest. Activism involves revealing truths, shaping narratives, and driving real change. In Rotterdam, from the fossil fuel industry to housing struggles, urgent battles connect to global movements.
Drawing from past and present activism, we will design strategies for non-conventional resistance—blockades, banners, legal tactics, social media campaigns, or subtler acts of dissent—using any necessary tools to challenge the status quo.
This workshop is part of This is Tomorrow 2025 course but can also be attended separately.
