The new home of De Appel Arts Centre was found in the old sailor’s society Zeeman’s Hoop, a 17th century double house on the IJ. The juxtaposition of modern art in a 17th century monumental shell is the tension of the art spaces and at the same time the challenge of the design. A no nonsense strategy of leaving existing layers of transformation present, keeps the story of the building and its many users intact while keeping the transformation lightweighted.
The project is designed by denieuwegeneratie, which transformed into Oomen Ontwerpt and krft in 2012.
