Lisbon Architecture Triennale

Prijsvraag

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale has launched an open call for self-funded projects to feature in its architecture festival next year.

A total of 12 winning concepts will be installed within the Palácio Sinel de Cordes cultural complex in time for the 7th edition of Lisbon Architecture Triennale which will run from 2 October to 8 December next year.

The open call seeks proposals which respond to the festival theme ‘How heavy is a city?’ which focuses on how artificial spaces can sustain humanity in the future, the connections between colonial structures and the tools used to represent human impact on the planet, and the use of new materials to ‘interact with rapidly changing ecosystems.’

According to the brief: ‘The Lisbon Triennale is looking for self-funded projects that echo the theme of its 7th edition, opening in the autumn of 2025. We want to promote an independent, effervescent and diverse production on a global scale. The selected proposals will be part of the Triennale official programme, sharing the international stage with the central exhibitions that the event provides.

‘How heavy is a city? The question that shapes the 7th Lisbon Triennale challenges our current understanding of human spaces: to answer it demands to inquire into a new planetary dimension of all networked technological artefacts and the energy, material and information fluxes that shape them, and to rethink notions of citizenship in a transformed world.’

Located on the western Iberian Peninsula where the Atlantic Ocean meets the River Tagus, Lisbon of the capital city of Portugal and the country’s largest settlement with around 550,000 inhabitants.

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale was founded in 2007 as a global non-profit festival aimed at promoting social research, architectural discourse and transformation.

The open call seeks proposals for a range of self-funded projects which could be hosted within the Palácio Sinel de Cordes which is the main host venue of the Triennale.

Submissions may take the form of an exhibition, installation, conference, presentation, a concert, performance, workshop, publication or online element. Applications must include team details along with three images.

Submissions will be judged on their relevance and relationship to the triennale theme, their originality and feasibility, and the relevance of their authorship and partnerships.

Proposals which can be expressed in the public realm and offer a ‘dynamic relationship with those who live and visit the city’ are encouraged. Judges will include the 2025 curators Ann-Sofi Rönnskog and John Palmesino along with José Mateus, president of the Triennale Board of Directors.
